Burmese women activists exchange visit to Timor-Leste

AJAR supported 10 women NGO workers from Burma/Myanmar, involved in our participatory research to learn new strategies to strengthen peace and justice. As part of a capacity-building strategy, AJAR invited staff from Women’s Organization Network (WON), Karen Women Empowerment Group (KWEG) and Kachin Women Association Thailand (KWAT) to do an exchange trip to Timor-Leste to learn from victims groups there and share with relevant actors working with survivors. The group went to Dili, in Timor-Leste, from 24th to 29th July 2014.

The general objective of the exchange visit was for the women from Burma/Myanmar to learn from the experience of Timor-Leste about strengthening survivors of violence and fulfilling their rights in a period of transition. One of the objectives of the visit was for the participants to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the truth and reconciliation commission (CAVR) as well as the experiences of the local victim’s associations, local authorities, and civil society organizations. The visit was organised by AJAR’s partner organization in Timor-Leste, Association Chega Ba Ita (ACBIT).
