Lessons from Indonesia and Timor Leste: Working with survivors to prevent torture

In May 2014, AJAR conducted a workshop and panel discussion in Yangon on ‘Working with Torture Survivors: Sharing Experiences from Indonesia and Timor-Leste’. The event aimed at training local civil society groups on transitional justice, prevention of torture and strategies to empower survivors.

AJAR staff talked about challenges for transitional justice in Asia, introducing the transitional justice framework, shared about the long pursuit of accountability in Indonesia, from the perspective of survivors’ empowerment, and highlighted lessons learned from the East-Timor Truth Commission’s experience in terms of justice for torture survivors.
